In 2002 Simon Boyce entered a simple song called 'Fill Me Up' into the 96.5FM Creative Challenge competition in the 'best vocal' category and won. On stage that night while he was singing Simon felt that God was not only listening but was lifting him to new heights. It was the moment he discovered that God really wanted him to be a songwriter.
Simon and his twin brother Jason have been singing all their lives…and according to their parents Noel and Desley, were singing before they could talk. Simon was born in Moree in rural NSW in 1972. Along with his twin and older brother Matthew, Simon and his family moved from town to town following the seemingly prophetic saying that 'Home is where the Army sends you'.
After finishing grade 12 with bad grades and no idea about what to do next, Simon spent the next two years working in fast food restaurants and attended night school to improve his chances of attending university to become an art teacher. During this time Simon discovered contemporary Christian music, stumbling across a Steven Curtis Chapman Cd ('For the Sake of the Call') in a Christian bookshop in Brisbane. In 1992, Simon spent 6 months working as a nanny for friends in Georgia in the USA. During this time Simon was exposed to not only full time Christian radio but also to American Country Music…the influence of which is now evident in his own music.
After finally getting into an education course in Brisbane, Simon (with Jason) started attending Stafford Heights Baptist Church. A close family friend had heard them singing at their parent's renewal of vows and invited them to sing at their church. The welcome they received and the incredible music and worship programme at the church was enough to make them stay. At this time Simon rededicated his life to Christ.
After a short but intense emotional breakdown Simon changed his career focus from teaching to industrial design. After a couple of years Simon began writing lyrics and eventually met up with Emily Duggan, forging a great friendship and developing his love for songwriting.
Simon graduated from QUT in Brisbane with distinction in his Industrial Design degree. He started working at Freedom Furniture in sales, eventually ending up in visual merchandising and interior design. During this time he also met and married Lindy Jansen (a preachers daughter and all!). They took a friend's advice and after they were married started to look for a new church, eventually moving to Tingalpa in the eastern suburbs of Brisbane. They began attending Wynnum Baptist Church.
After winning the Creative Challenge, Simon met up with another finalist Andrew Cochrane and the two began writing and recording. The two artists found they complemented each other in terms of their music and composing and began looking at recording an album. A short term missions trip to Africa with Lindy in 2003 put things on hold for Simon in terms of the album. The experiences he had in Zambia however compelled him into more writing. Over the next 12 months Simon met with both Andrew and Emily and eventually developed enough songs to create an album. During this time Simon also changed jobs and began working as a retail designer with Rowe Shop and Office Interiors in Beenleigh.
After a few technical hitches, Simon and Andrew nuckled down and over the Christmas 2004 break finished the album entitled 'Buses Going Nowhere'. Initially it was to be eleven songs but with just days before printing of the album was due to proceed, Simon wrote another song, 'To see the Sunrise'. Within two days it was finished and the new number one song on the CD. 'To see the Sunrise' is also the first song to be picked up by 96.5FM.
Simon continues to work as a designer with Rowe. This year, 2005, he and Lindy travelled back to Africa to continue work with the Eagles Wings Children's Centre. Simon is also the morning worship coordinator of Wynnum Baptist Church.
Musically, Simon's influences are so varied. He listens to a lot of contemporary Christian artists like Bebo Norman, Paul Alan, Bethany Dillon, Shane and Shane, and Jeremy Camp. Mainstream favourites are Alex Lloyd, Pete Murray and Kelly Clarkson (she has the greatest voice ever). The Rascal Flatts, a popular but very country band from the USA gets listened to quite a bit too.
